WHAT
Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations between 15 and 20 inches, highest amounts across Long Island. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph with isolated gusts up to 60 mph. Gusts on the east end of Long Island could reach 65 mph.
WHERE
Portions of southern Connecticut and southeast New York.
WHEN
From 1 PM Sunday to 6 PM EST Monday.
IMPACTS
Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday morning and evening commutes.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
Strongest winds are expected Sunday evening through Monday afternoon.
Recommendations
Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle. Check local Department of Transportation information services for the latest road conditions. A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay in your vehicle.
Mon 12:00 AM → Mon 5:00 AM EST
WHAT
1 1/2 to 2 1/2 ft of inundation above ground level likely in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline.
WHERE
Bronx, Northwest Suffolk, Northern Queens and Northern Nassau Counties.
WHEN
From midnight Sunday night to 5 AM EST Monday.
COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS
Widespread moderate flooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline likely. 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 ft of inundation above ground level possible in low lying, vulnerable areas. This would result in numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and homes/businesses with basements near the waterfront. Vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays. Ice cover in the bays and harbors could exacerbate flooding and cause damage to northeast to east facing shoreline structure.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
This water level forecast will be highly dependent on timing of windshift from northeast to north storm force winds with respect to the time of high tide, and will be refined over the next 24 hours. Ice cover in the bays and harbors could exacerbate flooding and cause damage to north to northeast facing shoreline structures.
Recommendations
Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
