Large breaking waves of 8 to 10 feet and dangerous rip currents expected in the surf zone.
WHERE
For the High Surf Advisory, west and north facing reefs of the Marianas. For the High Rip Current Risk, west, north and east facing reefs of the Marianas.
WHEN
Until 5 PM ChST Tuesday.
IMPACTS
Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
Surf has built along west, north and east facing reefs today as the primary northeast trade swell and secondary north-northwest swell increase, associated with a southward-moving shear line. This has brought hazardous surf along west and north facing reefs of the Marianas, and a high rip current risk along west, north and east facing reefs. Swell and surf will continue to build through Monday, followed by a brief lull on Tuesday. Then, a significant trade swell is expected to move through the Marianas, reinforced by a strong trade-wind surge behind the shear line. Surf will increase further and could become dangerous at times along north and east facing reefs, especially around Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Recommendations
Rip currents will be life threatening. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. Rip currents will be life threatening. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
